Written notation by Hollis Taylor, soundscape by JPL. Performed by JPL.
The idea behind my arrangement of Solo-esque was actually given to me by Hollis herself. Instead of using her field recordings, she suggested that I create my own to accompany her violin part. Whilst I was at home this year, I began to record sounds that instantly reminded me of, not only Australia, but more specifically my immediate surroundings. I found that even certain sounds completely out of context instantly triggered a memory of home...

Notation and Audio composed by Hollis Taylor, performed by JPL.
The field recordings used in this piece are a fantastic representation of all things Australian which is why I love this work. From creaky gates and dingo howls, to a conversation between some Aussie blokes talking about putting the ‘Pure Blondes and Nakeds’ on ice (which are two Australian beers, - not what it sounds like!) These samples are beautifully interwoven with the call of the Pied Butchbirds which is echoed in the violin part.

Live Recording of Violin and Computer Generated Sounds with Visuals
Whilst travelling in Japan I began to collect images of signs that when (somewhat poorly) translated into English, could be inspirational text directions for an improvised work. As I began to explore MaxMSP at the same time, I realised that these signs had great potential for a duet that would explore the use of real-time computer-generated music and live performer.
The signs and translations became the score, with the instrumentalist is reading the English translations, and the computer reading the Japanese text. Both ‘performers’ are responding to the same instructions, just in different languages. This piece was composed to represent the two stark cultural sides of Tokyo. What resonated with me most about Japan, especially Tokyo, was the supreme organisation mixed with the cultural chaos. This piece embodies my creative mind - organised chaos.
